About Aquebogue
The hamlet name comes from an Algonquian word, and the area was part of the original Town of Southold lands before Riverhead split off in 1792. Aquebogue sits squarely inside the Long Island Wine Region and is home to Paumanok Vineyards, founded in 1983 as one of the early producers of the modern North Fork wine industry. Farm stands and vineyard tasting rooms line Route 25 and Sound Avenue, and the lanes between those two corridors hold most of the hamlet's residential streets. The combination of farm families with long roots in the area and a slow influx of second-home owners produces yard sales that lean rural and practical.
