About Greenport
Through the nineteenth century Greenport was a major American whaling and shipbuilding port, and the dense grid of small workers' houses behind Front Street and Main Street still reflects that era. The Long Island Rail Road reached Greenport in 1844, making it the original eastern terminus of the line and tying the village into New York City freight and passenger traffic. The North Ferry to Shelter Island has run from the foot of Third Street for well over a century. The former Long Island Rail Road station now houses the East End Seaport Museum, and a 1920s carousel installed on the waterfront is part of the village's Mitchell Park. The maritime history shows up regularly in estate and tag sales across the village's older blocks.
