About Bridgehampton

Settlement followed Southampton's 1640 founding, with English families moving east into land the Shinnecock called Sagaponack and Mecox. The community was first known as Bullhead, then renamed after a 1686 bridge across Sagg Pond built by Ezekiel Sandford. The Beebe Windmill, built in 1820, still stands on Ocean Road and is a National Historic Landmark. Bridgehampton hosts the Hampton Classic, one of the largest outdoor horse shows in the United States, each Labor Day week; the equestrian properties north of Montauk Highway are part of the same horse-country fabric. The hamlet's older estate and farm properties continue to feed a steady spring-and-fall estate-sale calendar.
