About Water Mill

The settlement traces to 1644, when the Town of Southampton granted Edward Howell forty acres to build a grist mill for the colony; the resulting watermill on Old Mill Road gave the hamlet its name and is preserved today by the Water Mill Museum. The hamlet is also home to a nineteenth-century windmill on Water Mill Square, the combination of a working watermill and a windmill making it locally distinctive. The Parrish Art Museum moved from Southampton Village into a new Herzog and de Meuron building on Montauk Highway in Water Mill in 2012. The 11976 ZIP code was ranked the third most expensive in the United States in 2024 by median home price, and the area's large residential parcels feed a steady supply of professionally run estate sales.
