About Shelter Island

European settlement began in the 1650s when Nathaniel Sylvester established a trading plantation on the island, and the town was formally established in 1730. The North Ferry runs between Shelter Island Heights and Greenport on the North Fork, while the South Ferry connects Shelter Island to North Haven on the South Fork; State Route 114 ties the two crossings together across the island. Shelter Island Heights, laid out as a Methodist camp meeting community in the 1870s, retains its Victorian cottage architecture. Nearly a third of the island, around 2,300 acres, is conserved as the Mashomack Preserve by The Nature Conservancy. Because every purchase has to cross water, the island's estate and tag sales operate on different logistics from the mainland.
