Remsenburg-Speonk is a census-designated place at the western end of the Town of Southampton, covering two adjoining hamlets: Remsenburg, which runs along Moriches Bay between Seatuck Creek and the Speonk River, and Speonk, the inland section to the north. Together they take in about 3.6 square miles of land.

About Remsenburg-Speonk
Meadows here were leased to Southampton cattle owners as early as 1712, and most of the early residents came west from Southampton and Bridgehampton in the 1740s to clear forest and build farms. The Speonk name comes from a Native American word generally translated as 'high place,' while the bayfront section took the Remsenburg name in honor of Charles Remsen, a prominent resident who donated a new Presbyterian church. The English writer P. G. Wodehouse, who bought a house on Basket Neck Lane in 1952 and lived there until his death in 1975, is buried at that church. Speonk holds the Long Island Rail Road station and sits beside one of the largest rail yards on Long Island's East End, while Remsenburg has no stoplights and no businesses other than its post office and churches. Those quiet bayfront lanes, rather than Speonk's more workaday year-round streets, are where most of the community's estate sales tend to originate.
