About Cutchogue
The Old House on the Village Green, built around 1649, is a National Historic Landmark and one of the best-preserved examples of seventeenth-century English domestic architecture in the United States. Cutchogue holds a central place in the modern Long Island wine industry: in 1973 Louisa and Alex Hargrave planted Hargrave Vineyard here, the first commercial vinifera vineyard on Long Island, and dozens of vineyards have since followed across the surrounding hamlets. Albert Einstein spent the summers of 1938 and 1939 in a rented cottage on Little Peconic Bay south of Cutchogue. The mix of seventeenth- and eighteenth-century farmhouses and working agricultural land continues to feed the hamlet's estate-sale calendar.
