About Quogue

Permanent settlement followed the Quogue Purchase of 1659, in which John Ogden acquired the tract under a deed signed by Wyandanch, the Montaukett sachem, and a cluster of settlement-period houses still stands along Quogue Street. The arrival of the Long Island Rail Road in 1870 turned the farming community into a Victorian seaside resort: an 1877 railroad guide called Quogue the 'Queen of the Hamptons,' and by 1880 thirteen boarding houses and hotels lined Quogue Street.

The Quogue Field Club and the Shinnecock Yacht Club were both founded in 1887, the Quogue Library received its state charter in 1897, and the village's first schoolhouse, built in 1822, now stands on the library grounds as a museum. The 305-acre Quogue Wildlife Refuge on Old Country Road was founded in 1934, its core on land that had belonged to the Quogue Ice Company, and its seven miles of trails through the dwarf pine barrens are open free every day from sunrise to sunset.

The Quogue Historic District, added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2016, takes in 248 contributing buildings dating from the mid-eighteenth century through the mid-1930s, with the larger seasonal houses running south of Quogue Street toward the ocean and more modest homes to the north, many originally built for residents who worked for the summer colony; that older stock is where most of the village's estate sales tend to come from.
