About Wainscott
The hamlet takes its name from Wainscott, a village in Kent, England, the original home of many seventeenth-century East Hampton settlers. The Wainscott School, founded in 1730, was the last public one-room schoolhouse operating in New York State until a two-room annex was added in 2008; the original building still stands and the school remains in operation. Georgica Pond, on the eastern edge of the hamlet, is bordered by the Georgica Association, a private residential community established in the late nineteenth century. East Hampton Airport lies within Wainscott, and a 2020 effort to incorporate the hamlet as its own village, motivated in part by an offshore wind transmission cable proposal, was rejected the following year. The mix of older farmhouses and large summer estates produces a small but unusually deep stream of estate sales.
