About North Sea
Conscience Point, a hook of land on North Sea Harbor, is where English colonists from Lynn, Massachusetts, came ashore in June 1640 to found Southampton, which the town counts as the first English settlement in New York State, a claim the Town of Southold contests for its own settlement on October 21, 1640. The landing site is now a Southampton History Museum property, kept as a historic site and nature walk. The adjoining Conscience Point National Wildlife Refuge, 60 acres of maritime grassland, coastal woodland, and salt marsh, is managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The hamlet's public waterfront includes the town marina at Conscience Point, where the historic Tupper boathouse is being restored as the North Sea Maritime Center. The hamlet's mix of small year-round houses and larger wooded seasonal parcels produces most of its yard and estate sales.
