About Riverhead

The Town of Riverhead was separated from the Town of Southold in 1792, and the river that gave it its name remains the spine of the downtown. The town contains around 20,000 of the roughly 35,000 acres of farmland still cultivated on Long Island, with hamlets including Jamesport, Aquebogue, Calverton, and Wading River making up most of that agricultural area. Downtown Riverhead, along Main Street and East Main Street, retains a working business district with the Suffolk County Historical Society and the Long Island Aquarium. The mix of year-round households, working farms, and an actual downtown gives Riverhead a yard- and estate-sale mix more practical than the seasonal-driven calendar east of the canal.
