About Montauk
Authorized by Congress in 1792 and completed in 1796, the Montauk Lighthouse at the easternmost point is the fourth-oldest active lighthouse in the United States. The hamlet's modern layout largely follows the 1920s plan of developer Carl Fisher, who built the downtown around the circular green and a seven-story office tower while also putting up the 200-room Montauk Manor hotel on Signal Hill, before the 1929 crash ended his project. Six state parks, including Hither Hills and Montauk Point, take up large portions of the hamlet, and the working commercial dock at Montauk Harbor remains a center of saltwater fishing. Marine and fishing gear, alongside the contents of older seasonal cottages, are a regular feature of the hamlet's summer and shoulder-season sales.
