About Springs

Springs is widely described as a cradle of American abstract expressionism. Jackson Pollock and Lee Krasner bought a farmhouse on Springs-Fireplace Road in 1945, and the Pollock-Krasner House and Studio, now owned by Stony Brook University, preserves the studio with the paint-splattered floor of his late drip period. Willem and Elaine de Kooning later lived nearby, and a wider circle of artists and writers settled in or around the hamlet through the 1950s and 60s. Pollock is buried in Green River Cemetery, where many other Springs artists and writers are also interred. The hamlet's working year-round population, including tradespeople, fishermen, and artists, gives its yard sales a different inventory profile from the village to the south.
