Wading River is a hamlet on the Long Island Sound shore at the western edge of the Town of Riverhead, with part of the community crossing the line into the Town of Brookhaven. English records date its settlement to 1671, when eight colonial families chose the site for its stream, drinking water, and farmable soil; the 2020 census counted 7,731 residents.

About Wading River
The name comes from the Algonquian Pauquaconsuk, generally translated as 'the place where we wade for thick, round-shelled clams.' The Wading River Congregational Church anchors the hamlet center; its congregation put up its first meetinghouse in 1740, the second built in what is now Riverhead Township, and opened the present building on January 1, 1838. Wildwood State Park, created in 1925, covers a tract of hardwood forest off Hulse Landing Road that ends at a high bluff over Long Island Sound. From 1942 to 1945 the FBI ran a covert radio station out of a bluff-top house in the hamlet, transmitting to German intelligence as part of Allied deception operations; the house is now part of Camp DeWolfe and was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2018 as the Wading River Radio Station. The year-round population was under 500 before World War II and began growing in 1947 as returning servicemen built homes here, so the hamlet's sales run across both a small colonial core and a much larger postwar housing stock.
