About East Marion
Until 1836 the hamlet was known as Oysterponds Upper Neck, after the surrounding network of saltwater ponds. It was renamed East Marion that year in honor of General Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War officer known as the Swamp Fox, with the East prefix added to distinguish it from a town of Marion further upstate in Wayne County. Route 25, running the length of the fork, is the only continuous through road, and the hamlet is bordered by Long Island Sound on the north and Orient Harbor and Gardiners Bay on the south. The long ownership tenures common in the hamlet mean its estate sales often surface older nautical and farm-era pieces.
